January Theme: Generosity & Stewardship

By Josh Komis
Happy New Year Salem! We’re entering 2021 thankful for God’s blessings on us. As we reflect on God’s goodness and sovereignty, we realize that all good things come from above (Jas. 1:17). Everything belongs to him. A God-centered perspective helps us properly understand how to use our resources! Take a look as Wesley and Josh unpack this theme in a brief video.
We know that teaching about giving is important but showing what generosity looks like is life changing! This month, set aside a moment to walk your children or spouse through how and why your family gives. If you’re single, talk with God about your gift out loud and ask his input and blessing on it. It’s ALL ABOUT THE WHY! As our Lord showed us (Mk. 12:41-44) demonstrating why we give is just as powerful as the gift itself. Here’s some ideas to help you do this.
  1. Giving Together
Have your kids sit with you at the computer and explain what you’re doing as you give your tithe online (or in person). Maybe you want to go to the bank and make a withdrawal so your family can have the blessing of putting it physically into the offering box. Pray together as you give that God will use the money you’ve given to make disciples and glorify his Name.
  2. How to Handle Money
Did you receive a stimulus check or year end gift? You might want to engage your family in the decision about what to do with that money. After all, even that check belongs to Jesus right? Should you save? Use it to give to others? Set some aside for future needs that others have? Donate to a Christian non-profit? It’s exciting to consider these options together!
  3. Starting out Small
If you’re new to giving abundantly or helping your kids give, you can start with a generosity jar! Pick a missionary family or mission partner that you as a family want to bless with a gift for the ministry. Have your children design or decorate the jar so it is creative and meaningful. Everyone in the family should pitch in with amounts of loose change or dollars and feed the jar. Sacrifice a cup of Starbucks to feed the jar. Over a specified time these small sacrifices can add up to be a big example of God’s provision and blessing. Rejoice, thank the Lord, and give it!

Next week, we go live with our podcast interviewing Dr. David W. Jones of Southeastern Seminary about our theme and getting his valuable insights for opening our hearts to be generous disciples of Jesus Christ.

Please remember that we have gifted your family and all Salem families a free Ramsey+ account full of resources on stewardship and giving! The goal of this resource is to help free our families from debt or restructure spending in order to be able to freely give to the fullest. If you need help navigating the site, or if you are interested in a Salem group Financial Peace University class, please let us know!

We look forward to the rest of 2021 as we strive to help you pursue Jesus and share His story so you can make disciples in your home.
